Hidden Pines Fire Rebuild & Recovery Fund
Camp Wilderness Ridge is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in Bastrop County, TX
Camp Wilderness Ridge (CWR) is an independent, non-denominational Christian summer camp and retreat center located in the heart of the Lost Pines of Central Texas. Founded in 1987 with a mission of sharing the Gospel and developing young men into servant-leaders through affordable wilderness camping experiences. We offer seven weeks of Summer Camp for boys ages 7-17, a Spring Break Day Camp for local elementary school students, as well as wilderness retreats and campouts throughout the year for area churches and communities. Campers experience activities such as fishing, kayaking, tent camping and outdoors skills, marksmanship, low ropes team-building, high ropes challenge course, swimming, and daily Bible studies and worship. Many of the young men we serve are fatherless or in foster care. In a commitment to affordability for those of any means, the full price for a week of Summer Camp is about half the average in Texas (between $300 and $450 for a week of Summer Camp), and scholarships are awarded to over 30% of our campers.
Two wildfires in four years
On September 4, 2011, the Bastrop Complex Fire ravaged the original CWR property, burning nearly 100 acres of beautiful loblolly pine forest and destroying all but two structures. Over the past four years, God has provided over and over again for the ministry at Wilderness Ridge to continue to train young men and bless families and communities.
Now—four years later—we have weathered another devastating wildfire. On October 14, 2015, the Hidden Pines Fire raged through both the 120-acre property which God provided within months of the first fire as well as hitting again the original property which had experienced incredible regrowth in the intervening years. We’ve lost the café, kitchen, half of the cabins, one bathhouse, office, activities storage, maintenance barn, the housing for three staff families and our college-age Apprentice, equipment such as a Case trencher, Kubota tractor, Gator utility vehicle, several trailers, tools, and other maintenance equipment.
How can you help?
Despite these setbacks, Camp Wilderness Ridge remains committed to providing a Christ-centered, affordable wilderness experience for young men and families in Bastrop County. We’re looking for new property, either an existing camping environment we can just take on and run or raw land to rebuild on.
We need your partnership to make this possible again. Please join us in this mission by praying with us. Please join us by giving.
