Wilderness Ridge low-cost camping to restart at Forest Glen Camps
Camping and leadership training ministry for boys and men to continue at new site
Wilderness Ridge is excited to announce a move to the Springs camp facility near Rosebud, TX. The property, operated by Forest Glen Camps, has over 600 acres and a spring-fed lake. This will be a great setting for our leadership work with boys and young men. After several months of reviewing available properties and three unrealized offers, the board considered the lost ministry momentum and risk of diminishing resources for rebuilding the necessary facilities and infrastructure to continue operating Wilderness Ridge. With solemn minds and heavy hearts, the Board of Directors of Camp Wilderness Ridge (CWR) has made the decision to cease operating as Wilderness Ridge, Inc and dissolve the corporation. Per the bylaws of the camp, all assets must pass to a ministry with a similar statement of faith.
With Forest Glen Camps, we believe we have found a like-minded ministry that will cherish and sustain the heritage and unique ministry of Camp Wilderness Ridge. Forest Glen started in the pine forests near Huntsville operating Camp Good News in support of Child Evangelism Fellowship and now has over 40 years of experience hosting Christian camping in Texas. Over time, their location in the Sam Houston National Forest has been developed to provide summer day camps, outdoor education and outstanding retreat facilities. In 2004, Forest Glen purchased the Springs property near Rosebud, TX (east of Temple). Named after the numerous natural springs on the property, this beautiful, oak-forested property is on a bluff overlooking the Brazos River. In 2016, Forest Glen will serve over 20,000 campers at its' two campuses.
Forest Glen extended employment offers to all of the Wilderness Ridge staff and has set aside facilities, housing, and an area on the 13 acre lake at the Springs property that will be developed for Wilderness Ridge summer camps. Four retreat groups hosted in the past by Wilderness Ridge have already been booked for the 2016-17 retreat season at Forest Glen Springs. While some staff have decided to pursue other ministries or roles, the Low-cost Christian Camping ministry established and developed at Wilderness Ridge over the last 29 years will continue in 2017.
With over 600 acres and much of the necessary infrastructure in place, establishing CWR-style summer camp and retreats will take less time and resources than attempting to re-establish the camp on a new property. Dedicated activity areas for the Woodsman and Ranger Challenge summer camp programs will be constructed. With a beautiful lakefront area, lots of space for primitive camping, new marksmanship and challenge areas, summer camp in 2017 will be greater than ever while continuing to meet our low-cost goals.
Mark your calendar and watch for details for a Wilderness Ridge Open House at the Forest Glen Springs property from 2-6pm on Sunday September 25th.
